The Jaago community is an active social group comprising of a few social activists especially active in the Pali Hill area of Bandra and as a part of their initiative and activities, wanted to set up a community radio centre for the area, to spread their social message and to invite larger participation. This therefore required the design of a physical facility to realize their dream. Accordingly designs were made for a studio using a pre-built cabin in one of the buildings in the area and a studio was constructed within it. The studio was unique in that the recording room had to be versatile enough to have a single artist dub while also having a panel of speakers conduct a discussion around the table and have that broadcast. All this needed to be contained in a relatively small area- as it was a pre-fabricated cabin and the community was only assigned a small area of the terrace. Being pre-fabricated, disturbances from outside were a big problem and those needed to be addressed especially considering it was a radio station and live broadcasts were going to be telecast from there, therefore there was no chance for re-takes. All this though had to be done within a budget as it was a NGO with limited funds so, accordingly acoustic specs and designs were included in the cabin fabrication so that it brought down redundant treatment and limited the thickness of the final construction.
Treatment was added within the cabin to dampen the place and control the way it sounded. The structural mounting of the cabin onto the terrace was also carefully designed so as to not be subjected to any structure-borne sounds that the building could offer. And roof treatment was taken care of to minimize the disturbance from the air (distant planes, birds, etc.). Treatment was also done to minimize the effect of rain on the roof which otherwise would be very noisy.
Air conditioning was also taken care of. It was sealed in a manner in which it would not disturb the recording or the broadcast. As a part of the facility there was also a room which contained all the machines, UPSs, etc. some of which were a source of noise and therefore had to be isolated from the rest of the facility. Proper isolation treatment was done to make sure that no sound leaked into the studios.
